The Power of 7": Groundbreaking Vinyl 45 Singles, Rarities and Timeless Artistry

The 7-inch vinyl record, or 45, revolutionized the music industry when it was introduced in the late 1940s. Initially launched as a response to the 12-inch LP by Columbia Records and in direct competition with RCA Victor’s 78rpm shellac records, the 45 quickly became the go-to format for singles. With its smaller size, flexibility, and affordability, it became a staple of jukeboxes, radio stations, and music collectors. The 45 allowed artists to release catchy, short-form tracks at a low cost, making it accessible to a wider audience, especially teenagers. Hits like Chuck Berry's "Maybellene" and Elvis Presley’s "That’s All Right" became early milestones, while the 45’s ability to offer B-sides—often with surprising or lesser-known tracks—cemented its appeal. While the format faced decline with the rise of CDs in the 1980s, it has experienced a resurgence in recent years, driven by its nostalgic value and the ongoing interest in vinyl’s tactile experience. Today, the 45 remains a symbol of music history, representing both pop culture's most iconic moments and the enduring love for physical media.
