About the Program

Songwrights Apothecary Lab (S.A.L.) is the brainchild of five-time GRAMMY® Award-winning artist esperanza spalding and grew out of her longing to share music, dance, and teach and perform in ways that are more conducive to connection. The program builds with arts and education communities in the cities where esperanza and her company perform and where local partners share her passion for these connections.

This summer, S.A.L.  invites the Los Angeles community from intersecting disciplines related to education, therapeutic arts, dance and music to collaborate, co-learn and engage in two sessions: Sharebacks and Co-musicking sessions—components of the Lab that engage the broader public. These sessions are held in collaboration with local partners at Earvin "Magic" Johnson Recreation Area.

A Songwrights Apothecary Lab Shareback

This is a chance to hear, discuss and offer feedback on new music that addresses the issues of wellbeing, being made right here in Los Angeles. This session is free and open to the public.

A Songwrights Apothecary Lab Co-musicking Session

This is an improvisational music-making session. Participants will join in creating beats, rhythms and notes that address specific questions of wellbeing. This session is free; however, advance registration required due to limited space.
