LOS ANGELES (June 23, 2022)— The Music Center makes a big splash for the entire familia with the announcement of the second annual Summer SoundWaves outdoor concert series with some of L.A.’s favorite Latin music artists taking the stage at Jerry Moss Plaza on three specially-scheduled Saturday evenings. La Marisoul y Son California and Jackie Mendez kick off the ticketed series on July 9 followed by Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble featuring Telmary on July 30 and Chiquis on August 20. Programmed by TMC Arts, Summer SoundWaves will reflect the diversity of Latin music with three affordable, family-friendly concerts in one of L.A.’s top outdoor settings. From Mexican folk music and Afro Latin Jazz to Cuban rap, spoken word and Latin Pop hits, each outdoor concert will bring L.A. the rhythms and flair of Latin America for an unparalleled experience that will light up the summer nights.

La Marisoul y Son California and Jackie Mendez
La Marisoul y Son California kick off The Music Center’s Summer SoundWaves 2022. A group of Southern California-based traditional Mexican folk artists, band members La Marisoul Hernandez, Federico Zuniga, Victor Murillo and Jorge Herrera celebrate the diverse styles within Jarocho and Mexican folk music as they share their passionate and soulful interpretations of Son and Cancion Mexicana.
The evening begins with vocalist Jackie Mendez, a San Gabriel Valley native who began playing in various bands after being introduced to Ska music and then crossed over to a more “Soulful Rocksteady” sound.

Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble featuring Telmary
Pianist, composer and educator Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble headline the second concert in the The Music Center’s Summer SoundWaves series. Born in Mexico and raised in New York City, O’Farrill is known for his contributions to Afro Latin Jazz, performing with a wide spectrum of artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, Harry Belafonte, his own Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra, Ballet Hispanico and the Malpaso Dance Company, for whom he has written three ballets. His well-reviewed and highly praised Afro-Latin Jazz Suite from the album CUBA: The Conversation Continues (Motéma) took the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition and the 2016 Latin Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album. His powerful Three Revolutions from the album Familia-Tribute to Chico and Bebo was the 2018 Grammy Award winner for Best Instrumental Composition. His current album Four Questions (ZOHO) is the first to embody all original compositions, including the title track, which features the brilliant orator Dr. Cornel West. This album has won a Grammy for 2021.
Joining Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Ensemble will be Latin Grammy-nominated Cuban rapper, musician and spoken word artist Telmary whose music combines genres, tears down cultural barriers and connects people of different backgrounds and languages. With seven albums under her wing, Telmary has refined a technique in Afro-Cuban contemporary music, which enables her to use her voice as a communication instrument while blending as a percussive element.

Chiquis
Janney Marín, better known as Chiquis, is a Latin Grammy Award-winning artist (singer and songwriter), businesswoman, bestselling author and television personality. In 2013 Chiquis, fulfilling a promise she made to her mom Jenni Rivera, began her career as a solo singer. Less than two years later, her first album Ahora became #1 in sales for two consecutive weeks on iTunes and the album was certified Gold by the RIAA. The album's five singles were in the Top 10 on national radio stations. With Ahora Chiquis also received important nominations and was honored with prestigious awards. Since then, the young singer has garnered the 2020 Latin Grammy for Best Banda Album (for Playlist), a Premio Lo Nuestro for Female Artist of the Year (2017) and Female Artist of the Year, Regional Mexican (2016) as well as a Premio de la Radio for Female Artist of the Year (2015). In May 2022, she reached #1 on Mexico’s popular radio chart with her single Quiero Amanecer Con Alguien. The song is part of her recently-released album Abeja Reina which has already received critical acclaim.

The Music Center continues to embrace important safety practices to protect guests, artists and staff. Guests are encouraged to wear face coverings while on its campus and at Jerry Moss Plaza. No proof of vaccination or testing is required for Summer SoundWaves. Food and beverages will be available for sale on-site. No outside alcohol is permitted. All tickets will be digital and will be scanned by usher staff on-site. Self-parking will be available in The Music Center Main Garage, accessible via the Grand Avenue entrance. Valet parking is not available.
In accordance with Centers for Disease Control and Los Angeles County Department of Public Health directives, The Music Center worked behind-the-scenes during the pandemic to prepare for the return of live performances in its venues, both indoors and outdoors, by implementing new measures and procedures. The Music Center became the first performing arts organization in the nation to earn the UL Verified Healthy Buildings Mark for Indoor Air and Water Quality. The Music Center underwent an extensive assessment process to earn the verification, demonstrating that each of its four venues, Grand Park’s administrative office and The Music Center Annex, has excellent quality for indoor air and water. Additionally, The Music Center enhanced all cleaning procedures, installed hand sanitizer dispensers in all public spaces and created a contact-free experience in its public restrooms as well as instituted electronic ticketing and a digital program book, among other measures.
