LA Opera
West Side Story
The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion
Countless fans know and love Leonard Bernstein’s landmark work with songs like “America,” “Somewhere” and “I Feel Pretty,” but few have seen it like this. Originally conceived as an opera, this production pays tribute to Bernstein’s impact as only LA Opera can, with James Conlon leading the brilliant LA Opera Orchestra, not to mention a magnificent cast in top vocal and physical form. New York City’s West Side is split between the Jets and the Sharks—but these warring gangs never imagined that two of their own could fall in love. Tenor Duke Kim is Tony, a former Jet who finds himself falling for Maria (the radiant Gabriella Reyes). However, Maria is promised to another, and her brother Bernardo is more than willing to rally his Sharks to keep it that way. The two lovers dream of a happily ever after, but their neighborhood can see tragedy coming a mile away.

La Bohème
The Music Center’s Dorothy Chandler Pavilion
Rodolfo is a struggling poet burning his manuscripts to keep out the winter chill. Mimi is a fellow tenant with big dreams and a deadly illness. A chance meeting has them falling in love, but when you’re at the bottom of Parisian society, every day could be your last. Puccini’s blockbuster opera returns to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion stage starring Janai Brugger as the sweet but suffering Mimi and Oresto Cosimo as the lovestruck Rodolfo, with Gihoon Kim and Erica Petrocelli as the on-again-off-again lovers Marcello and Musetta. Resident Conductor Lina González-Granados leads Puccini’s transcendent score, awash in lavish Romanticism and gorgeous melodies. Director Brenna Corner helms a timeless production from Herbert Ross that the Los Angeles Times calls a “warm, nostalgic evocation of Paris in Puccini’s time.”

The Rite of Spring with Dudamel
The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall
Stravinsky’s thrilling and visceral vision of Pagan Russian ritual and sacrifice set off a rhythmic revolution and has become something of a signature piece for the LA Phil, offering a rite of passage for music directors to leave their own musical fingerprints on the transfixing ballet score. Dudamel’s rendition has been praised by the Los Angeles Times for unleashing the “uncontrollable disastrous forces in us” balanced with “the musical mastery” needed to control that superhuman musical intensity. Dudamel pairs The Rite of Spring with The Firebird suite, another of Stravinsky’s ballets, filled with romance and magic that concludes with melodic majesty. Opening the program is the U.S. premiere of LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams’ Frenzy. Inspired by the feeling of processing the modern world and its incessant digital drip of news, Frenzy is rhythmically driven in its own right, unwinding an aura of agita through a hall of mirrors into “a tense nocturnal chase, with a touch of film noir glamor” (Daily Telegraph).

Dudamel Conducts Mahler’s “Resurrection”
The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall
Mahler’s Second Symphony charts a journey from funeral to rebirth, from the terrifying to the transcendent. Its indelible power was memorably captured in the 2023 film Maestro. Gustavo Dudamel, an ardent champion of Mahler, takes on this majestic work, featuring soprano Juliana Grigoryan, mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor and the Los Angeles Master Chorale. “The effect is so great that one cannot describe it,” Mahler reflected of the symphony. “If I were to say what I think of this great work, it would sound too arrogant in a letter… The whole thing sounds as though it came to us from some other world. I think there is no one who can resist it. One is battered to the ground and then raised on angel’s wings to the highest heights.”

Mehta Leads Bruckner’s Eighth
The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall
Anton Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony is defined by extremes—at times bombastic, dissonant and soaring and, at others, to quote Zubin Mehta, “deeply Romantic” and lyrical in a way that “will break your heart.” Bruckner constructed massive musical architecture that invites listeners to look upward in sublime contemplation, and his Eighth is his most towering cathedral of symphonic ideas for its length and orchestral scale. Zubin Mehta has been studying Bruckner and the Eighth for seven decades, making this a rare opportunity to experience the symphony in all its maximalist glory.

Recovecos: Angélica Negrón & Lido Pimienta
The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall
Recovecos, curated by Angélica Negrón, is a Green Umbrella program highlighting the music of Caribbean and Latin American composers exploring the many physical and intangible spaces of memory, nostalgia, labor, play, catharsis, longing, joy and healing. Recovecos translates to “nooks” or “hidden corners.” This concert will examine the obscured spaces, twists and turns that arise when creating a sense of belonging in two places simultaneously, especially when displaced from home. One of The Washington Post’s 2022 “Composers and Performers to Watch,” Raquel Acevedo Klein makes her Walt Disney Concert Hall debut with the LA Phil New Music Group, conducting a brand-new arrangement of Darian Donovan Thomas’ “textural, synth-drenched, and ambient reimagining” of “Volver, Volver”—the Mexican ranchera song by Fernando Maldonado.
Colombian Canadian singer-songwriter Lido Pimienta lends her “irrepressible confidence” (Pitchfork) and voice to her own world-premiere piece as well as Negrón’s powerful “Arquitecta.” Based on a poem by Puerto Rican writer Amanda Hernández, “Arquitecta” is a musical illustration of how women build, nurture and create spaces of belonging, via glittering splashes of percussion and woodwinds.
“Pasemisí, Pasemisá” kicks off the concert with a playful and nostalgic blend of styles that defined composer Christian Quiñones’ childhood in Puerto Rico—reggaetón, 80s music, hip hop and rock. Also on the program is Tania León’s Cuban dance-inspired “Toque,” a wind quintet by LA Phil National Composers Intensive alum Juan Andrés Vergara, and “I’m Right Here” by Natalie Joachim, a Haitian American composer with “a fresh and invigorating cross-cultural voice” (The Nation).

Mozart, Ravel & Pintscher
The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall
A pair of Ravel’s impressionistic masterworks bookend this era spanning concert, led by the prodigious Matthias Pintscher. The enchanting Mother Goose Suite begins the evening amid magical pagodas and fairy gardens. The concert concludes with his dazzling and dizzying La Valse, a masterful juxtaposition of the elegance and violence of 19th-century imperial society.
In between, the incomparable Emanuel Ax joins the LA Phil for Mozart’s sublime Piano Concerto No. 25. “I think there’s a grandeur about this piece,” says Ax, from its stately opening to its lyrical slow movement Ax describes as “pure magic” to the finger-twisting finale. Pintscher, one of the most exciting compositional voices of his generation, leads the L.A. premiere of his work neharot, a search for light in the midst of troubled times.

Elgar’s Enigma
The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall
Elgar’s Enigma Variations contain one of the most fascinating mysteries in British classical music. Consisting of a theme and 14 variations—some dark and searching, others playful and assertive—the orchestral work builds upon a wistful theme that was written as a countermelody to an unknown piece that Elgar never shared. A century later, no one has cracked the code to the secret tune. Roberto González-Monjas opens the program with another set of variations, this time by Korngold, overflowing with golden harmonies and a folkish warmth. Sheku Kanneh-Mason, “a cellist so talented it is simply outrageous” (The Courier and Evening Telegraph), reunites with the LA Phil for the world premiere of an Edmund Finnis concerto. After working together on Kanneh-Mason’s 2022 album Song, the cellist described the British composer’s work as “distinctive in character and perfectly written for the cello.”

Los Angeles Master Chorale
Two Titans | The Music of Beethoven and Verdi
The Music Center’s Walt Disney Concert Hall
The Los Angeles Master Chorale begins its 2025 – 2026 season featuring Beethoven’s Mass in C major, Op. 86 and Verdi’s Four Sacred Pieces—monumental works that embody themes of spiritual devotion, human empathy and the search for solace in times of uncertainty. Beethoven’s Mass in C major, Op. 86, with its grandeur and intricate choral harmonies, reflects a deep sense of reverence and aspiration. Similarly, Verdi’s Four Sacred Pieces, written in the composer’s later years, explores themes of gratitude, redemption and divine presence. Parts of Beethoven's Mass in C major, Op. 86 premiered on the same legendary concert as his 5th and 6th Symphonies and his 4th Piano Concerto, making that the most “stacked” program in the history of music. Verdi wrote the Four Sacred Pieces as he was putting the finishing touches on his masterpieces Otello and Falstaff. Of the four pieces, Verdi liked the Te Deum so much that he reportedly wanted to be buried with the score.

He set these texts for voices and the groundbreaking musical ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars and enlisted video pioneer Tal Rosner to invent a way to visualize the meanings of the music in video and projection. before and after nature received its world premiere performance in February 2025 at Stanford University with the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Grant Gershon and Master Chorale singers.
