Diana Zaslove Artsource Unit
It Was a Lover and His Lass, Come Again, Vergene Bella and Gioto al Canto Mio
The Renaissance was a time when composers began to emphasize the expressiveness of the human voice as a solo instrument, often paired with the lute. This unit celebrates enduring music of the Renaissance and features two English songs, one composed by Thomas Morley with words by William Shakespeare from his play "As You Like It," and two Italian songs. Poetry is combined with music for the purpose of expressing a variety of emotions, especially aspects of love. The lessons provide guidance for dancing to a Renaissance song, playing a Renaissance tune on the recorder and writing a sonnet, then setting it to music. Throughout, there are interdisciplinary connections to history, language and visual art with an emphasis on Enduring Values.
