American Ballet Theatre Artsource Unit
The Sleeping Beauty
Since its founding in 1940, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) has been collecting and performing a repertoire of ballet classics, as well as developing new work. Tchaikovsky’s The Sleeping Beauty ballet, based on the fairy tale by the same name, is featured in this unit. Lessons introduce ballet terms and give clear steps to guide students through the process of adapting a story so it can be told through dance. An important piece of this focuses on five points of story structure related to the narrative ballet. Enduring Values and Transformation are woven throughout the unit.
